The Imprisonment of Fr. Jeremiah Crowley

Nothing illustrates the civil situation in Ireland better than the events that culminated with the imprisonment of Goleen Catholic Curate, Fr. Jeremiah Crowley. The story begins with the eviction of an old, blind man, related to several gentry families in the area, Samuel Townshend Bailey, from his home on land owned by the Kilmoe Church Body of Trustees at Toormore, Teampall na mBocht. It ends with the imprisonment of Fr. Crowley for seven months under the PPP act.

Crowley, a firebrand Curate who suffered imprisonment rather than pay bail for future good behaviour, who emigrated to the U.S.A. twice, stayed the second time, and ended up excommunicated in Chicago. He subsequently married and entered the real estate business.
