Reuter Telegram vis Crookhaven
This is a great story! Why did Julius Reuter commission the Siemens Brothers to construct a private telegraph like from South Mall, Cork to far-way, isolated Crookhaven in 1863. To be first with the news from the United States of America, then in the middle of a brutal civil war, supplied by his news partners, the Associated Press in New York. The electric telegraph had transformed communication in a way that is impossible to imagine today. Even though it had spread like wildfire across the land, it still had not crossed large bodies of water. How Julius Reuter gained a five hour advantage over his competitors at Roche’s Point in Cork is one of the great stories in this book.
