The Rock We Stand On
The bedrock of the entire Mizen Peninsula consists of a single, ancient rock formation. From the slopes of Mount Gabriel, west along the ridge of the peninsula, north and south down to the sea, this rock is visible in a variety of appearances depending on location.
Rock cannot talk but it can tell a story. A journey along the north side of the Mizen allows one immediate access to this rock and the opportunity to view the different weathering effects and to consider that one is experiencing a direct connection to the period of time when vertebrate life moved from the sea to the land and the first seed bearing plants evolved.
When one stands on a piece of exposed rock on the Mizen Peninsula, one is standing on rock that is almost seven kilometres deep, was laid down a very, very long time ago in a location very far from where it currently resides. There are few places in Ireland where one can get so close, so easily to such ancient rock formations.
