Humans Reach The European Atlantic Fringe
The first humans to farm The Mizen left but one relic of their existence here: the portal dolmen in Arderrawinny townland, 6,000 years old. These farmers were not the first inhabitants of The Mizen or even the first humans to visit, that honour belongs to the hunter-gatherers, descended from the first humans to leave Africa, who were the first to visit and the first to inhabit the land that appeared after the 100,000 year old ice-sheet started to retreat.
The North Atlantic fringe was one of the last European locations to be colonised by humans. Until the ice-sheet retreated completely, North and North-West Europe was inhospitable to humans.
