The Fight For Independence
A key aspect of the I.R.A.’s strategy during the Anglo-Irish War 1919—1922 was to remove the R.I.C. from rural Ireland as far as was practicable. This tactic was particularly successful on the Mizen and Sheepshead peninsulas where, one-by-one the R.I.C. barracks in the villages were made uninhabitable. Last to go was Schull.
Other notable events of the time was the particularly perilous raid on the Fastnet Lighthouse for explosives, two raids on the Mizen signal station, also for explosives, and the burning of Schull workhouse.
