What Is The Mizen?
Those of you who know the Mizen Peninsula, live there, are from there or visit there, don’t need to read any further. The Mizen Peninsula is Ireland’s most south westerly peninsula, south of the Sheep’s Head Peninsula and north of Long Island Bay. Its eastern boundary is roughly defined as a line from Durrus to Ballydehob. There are four villages on the Mizen, in order of appearance travelling west: Ballydehob, Schull (pronounced skull), Goleen and Crookhaven. West Cork in general, and the Mizen in particular, is not known for its beaches but worthy of mention are: the gentle beaches at Ballyrisode and White Strand, Crookhaven; the more boisterous Barleycove, and Galley Cove facing straight out to the Fastnet from under Brow Head.
